Photometry of four binary subdwarf B stars and the nature of their unseen companion stars

چکیده
We present lightcurves of four binary subdwarf B stars, Ton 245, Feige 11, PG1432+159 and PG1017−086. We also present new spectroscopic data for PG1017−086 from which we derive its orbital period, P = 0.073d, and the mass function, fm = 0.0010±0.0002M⊙. This is the shortest period for an sdB binary measured to-date. The values of P and fm for the other sdB binaries have been published elsewhere. We are able to exclude the possibility that the unseen companion stars to Ton 245, Feige 11 and PG1432+159 are main-sequence stars or sub-giant stars from the absence of a sinusoidal signal which would be caused by the irradiation of such a companion star, i.e., they show no reflection effect. The unseen companion stars in these binaries are likely to be white dwarf stars. By contrast, the reflection effect in PG1017−086 is clearly seen. The lack of eclipses in this binary combined with other data suggests that the companion is a low mass M-dwarf or, perhaps, a brown dwarf.

Binary sdB Stars with Massive Compact Companions
The masses of compact objects like white dwarfs, neutron stars and black holes are fundamental to astrophysics, but very difficult to measure. We present the results of an analysis of subluminous B (sdB) stars in close binary systems with unseen compact companions to derive their masses and clarify their nature. Radial velocity curves were obtained from time resolved spectroscopy. The atmospher...
متن کاملThe detection of binary companions to subdwarf B stars ?
Intermediate dispersion spectroscopy of a sample of 40 hot subdwarf B stars between 5500 A and 9000 A has been obtained. The sample includes a large fraction of targets which have been studied photometrically. Seven targets show strong lines due to the infrared Ca ii triplet, the unequivocal signature of a cool companion. The positive Ca ii identiications include known photometric binaries and ...
متن کاملA new HW Vir binary from the Palomar Transient Factory PTF1 J072455.75+125300.3 - An eclipsing subdwarf B binary with a M-star companion
We report the discovery of an eclipsing binary – PTF1 J072456+125301– composed of a subdwarf B (sdB) star (g′ = 17.2m) with a faint companion. Subdwarf B stars are core helium-burning stars, which can be found on the extreme horizontal branch. About half of them reside in close binary systems, but few are known to be eclipsing, for which fundamental stellar parameters can be derived. We conduct...

Utilizing the Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) Second Incremental Data Release Catalog, we have retrieved near-IR magnitudes for several hundred hot subdwarfs (sdO and sdB stars) drawn from the Catalogue of Spectroscopically Identified Hot Subdwarfs (Kilkenny, Heber, & Drilling 1988, 1992). This sample size greatly exceeds that of previous studies of hot subdwarfs. Examining 2MASS photometry a...
